Getting Here

Getting to Haida Gwaii involves a choice between two options: by air or by sea.

While you may be the adventurous type with your own sailing vessel or seaplane to access Port Clements from Masset Inlet, for the travel information we provide below we are assuming you are a more typical visitor arriving by more normal means.

Either option of land and/or sea will typically lead a visitor or new resident to travel along Highway 16 to get to Port Clements. From Sandspit it is 80.1km (going North), From Skidegate it is 58.8km (going North), and from Masset it is a 43.6km (going South) trip to get to Port Clements.

Most people will drive, but you will see a variety of hikers and bikers who also traverse the Highway to get around. Unfortunately, there are no public transportation networks, such as bus services or trains, on Haida Gwaii.

There are two airports on Haida Gwaii, both with only direct service to Vancouver.

One is in the community of Sandspit, the only community on Moresby Island and provides service via Air Canada (coming from Vancouver out of Vancouver International Airport [YVR]). This airport is owned and operated by Transport Canada. Whether arriving or departing, using this airport will mean taking the small ferry between Alliford Bay and Skidegate via BC Ferries.

The other is in the community of Masset, which operates its own municipal airport and is the only airport on Graham Island. It provides service via Pacific Coastal (coming from Vancouver out of South Terminal [YVR]).

There is also a seaplane base in Masset, Inland Air Charters, that provides a direct service from Masset to Prince Rupert.

Most seafarers will be taking the ferry route from Prince Rupert (Terminal) to Skidegate (Terminal) via BC Ferries. This offers a means for both foot passengers and vehicles to traverse the Hecate Strait which separate Haida Gwaii from the mainland of British Columbia. The ferry terminal at Skidegate Landing is your point of departure to both Prince Rupert (big ferry) and Alliford Bay (little ferry to Sandspit)

To find current schedules please visit BC Ferries and select your departure location then destination.
