CAO Recruitment

The Village of Port Clements is looking for dynamic hands-on leader to become our next Chief Administrative Officer (CAO).  Reporting directly to Mayor and Council, the CAO is responsible for managing the day-to-day activities of the Municipality.  As CAO, you will advise and inform Council on the operations and affairs of the Municipality, act as the Corporate Officer and Statutory Approving Officer, and ensure that the Village is compliant with all governing legislation.

Our quaint seaside community of approx. 282 (2016 Census), servicing an area population of about 564, is centrally located on the unique archipelago of Haida Gwaii near the estuary of the Yakoun River.  We are known for the beauty of our natural environment and rural atmosphere, where children, seniors and a healthy lifestyle are highly valued.  Port Clements boasts a Forestry Museum, elementary school, library, senior’s room, a variety of parks, groomed and natural walking trails, RV and tenting space as well as accommodation options for travellers.  The community has a land area of 13.04 km2 and features a significant portion of undeveloped Crown Land, forests, greenways, rivers and ocean beaches, perfect for hiking, fishing, bird watching and exploring.

The Village of Port Clements has been working on a number of planning initiatives over the past few years.  An Asset Management project was completed in 2019, a Housing Needs Assessment, Child Care Needs Assessment, Wildfire plan and Island-wide Animal Control study were all completed in 2020, with a Haida Gwaii Erosion Study and Official Community Plan update planned for 2021.  These plans will help to form the basis for revitalization of the community in years to come under the direction of the new CAO.

Haida Gwaii is called the Galapagos of Canada, which means that our community is both rural, remote and isolated, and set amongst incredible natural beauty.  Transportation to the islands is mainly by air or ferry, which can be weather dependent and we recognize that we might not be the right fit for everyone.  If you are tired of the challenges of heavy traffic volumes, long commutes and low work-life balance, you will find everything you need here on a day-to-day basis.  We are offering the right person the opportunity to dance at midnight at the Edge of the World Music Festival, drive an old beater in the mud bog, experience the rich culture of the Haida nation, and get to know the names of all the dogs in your community.  We will wait for you to find us.

We offer a salary commensurate with education and experience and attractive benefits.  An application package is available on the Village of Port Clements website.  Council may choose to start the review process prior to the closing date.  To apply, please contact us to receive an application package then submit your cover letter, and resume by February 22, 2021 at 4:00 pm to:
